Techademy

Techademy organizes training-days for web-developers. During the monthly Techademy training-days, developers can gain and exchange knowledge on a wide variety of subjects. This ranges from PHP to frameworks and from version control to system administration.

Every Techademy training-day will consist of two workshops of a half day and a lunch. The subjects will differ per workshop-day and a day will cost around 150 euro excl VAT per person. So do check our planning to see which training-days are currently scheduled.

Our Techademy goal is to inspire. After a workshop-day you will be up-to-date and you are able to dive deeper into the subjects. Besides that, we like to keep training to be cheap enough for everybody to enjoy. For a Techademy workshop-day, you don’t need to squander your annual training budget. Besides that, Techademy workshopdays are also affordable for beginning developers!

Techademy schedule 2012

Because so many of you have asked for it, we would like to inform you on the subjects we have scheduled for the rest of this year. Not all of these workshops have a full description yet, but at least you get an idea what we will have in store for you. Based on these subject you can already subscribe to the workshops but most training days do not have a fixed date yet. Unless we have a reason to diverge from it, the training days will be normally held on either the 3rd or the 4th Friday of each month.

Maart: Scrum / Documentation
An intro into Agile development methodology “Scrum” and an intro into writing software documentation.

April: CouchDB / Solr
An into into the CouchDB NoSQL solution and Solr searching.

Mei: OO / Design Patterns
An introduction into object oriented programming and the usage of design patterns in PHP.

Juni: Varnish / PHP speedups
How to use Varnish (including ESI snippets) and some tips&tricks on how to speed up your PHP code.

Juli: PHPUnit / Jenkins
Unit testing for beginners plus the setup and usage of Jenkins – the Continuous Integration system for quality control.

Augustus: PHP CLI / Socket programming
PHP through the command line + PHP socket programming

September: Zend framework 2 intro / Symfony2 intro
An intro into the two biggest and “newest” PHP frameworks.

October: PHP 5.3+4 / Advanced Symfony2
How to use the PHP 5.3 features (closures, namespaces etc) and a look at the newest php 5.4
features, plus an advanced symfony2 workshop.

November: PHP & Security
A complete day on PHP and security issues.

December: PDO / MySQL
A dive into PHP Data Objects (PDO) and an intro into MySQL query optimization.

Trainingday March: Scrum and Documentation

Until now we’ve always been talking about technological stuff, but for our March trainingday, we’re going to have a look at the organization. We start with projectmanagement, more specifically Scrum, with Joshua doing a workshop in which you learn what Scrum is, how it works and how to implement Scrum. After that Stefan will go into the most avoided subject for developers: Documentation. During this workshop we’ll have a look at different types of documentation, both functional and technical, and using some examples we’ll actually write some documentation (or generate it!).

Just like other trainingdays a laptop is required, and it’s useful to have PHP5 installed (and also usable on commandline). The trainingday will take place on March 16, and will cost 150 euro (ex VAT). See this page for more information or registration.

Techademy and PHPBenelux

As Techademy, we’ve set our target to inspire people to look beyond their usual technologies, and to introduce new technology to people in a fast, easy and affordable way. To teach people things they can immediately apply to their day job. Workshops such as the ones we deliver are perfect for this, but they are not the only way for this. You could also attend usergroup meetings, or conferences.

Being active members of the PHP Community, we feel it is important to support usergroups and conferences. For this reason we are happy and proud to announce that we are Silver Sponsor of the PHPBenelux Conference 2012 in Antwerp. Initiatives like the PHPBenelux Conference are very important for knowledge transfer, so we want to support this.

To make it even cooler, we also want to offer someone the chance to attend the PHPBenelux Conference. Among all participants of our January trainingday, we will raffle a free ticket for the conference! So aside from learning about Silex/Microframeworks and REST there is another chance now to register for the January trainingday. See you then!

Trainingday February: Composer and Puppet

In Februari we step away a bit from the real development to have a look at tools that can help you in the development process. For instance, how do you ensure that all team members use exactly the same configuration for a project? Puppet can help you in that, and Joshua will explain how Puppet works and how you can use it. Another common problem is how to deal with dependencies to external (open source) libraries. A relatively new solution to this is Composer, and Stefan will explain during the February trainingday how this works and how you can apply it to your own projects. Both workshops have a very practical approach, so you will actually be doing stuff yourself. Make sure to bring a laptop!

Free Git/SPL Training

As you are probably aware, Techademy organises next monday a special trainingday for 3FM Serious Request. On this day we hope to collect a lot of money for the Red Cross Foundation. Next monday you can dive into the deep of Git and the Standard PHP Library (SPL). The complete revenue of that day will be donated to 3FM Serious Request.

That by itself is great. But how about supporting a good cause for FREE? You can attend your trainingday without having to pay for it, and still there will be 150 euro donated to 3FM Serious Request! Jeroen Beekhof of Beekhof Professional Services has offered to sponsor 1 person for the workshop. Jeroen doesn’t need the actual training, but like to support the initiative and so we can sponsor one person to the training.

Trainingsday january: Silex and REST

Even though we haven’t even done the December workshopday, we are already looking ahead to Janary. The first workshopday of the new year will be held on friday 20th January and will take place at the office of Ingewikkeld in Woudenberg. The subjects we have chosen are the PHP microframework Silex and the HTTP-based concept of REST. Stefan Koopmanschap will explain in his workshop on Silex what a microframework is and what you can do with it, followed by some practical exercises with Silex. And Joshua Thijssen will teach you in his REST workshop what REST actually is and you will build an actual RESTfull API.

3FM Serious Request!

Ieder jaar organiseert landelijk radiostation 3FM de Serious Request week: 3 DJ’s worden opgesloten in een glazen huis en proberen zo veel mogelijk geld op te halen voor het goede doel: het Rode Kruis. Ook dit jaar weer zal 3FM de actie organiseren, het glazen huis staat dit jaar in Leiden.

Naast acties die door 3FM worden georganiseerd vraagt het station luisteraars om ook zelf met initiatieven te komen. En wij ondersteunen dit graag! Daarom hebben we besloten om de volledige opbrengst van 150 euro per inschrijving van de Techademy Trainingsdag op 19 december te doneren aan Serious Request! Schrijf je nu dus snel in en sla twee vliegen in een klap: Leer over de Standard PHP Library en Git, en steun daarmee automatisch ook Serious Request.
